It's about magic...magecraft, at the base of it. Mages believe magecraft is inherent to them and they can freely use it as they like with no limits. The Church, on the other hand, looks down on magecraft. Magic should only be an expression of a divine miracle given by the Lord. It is a disgrace to see mages claim this kind of power and use it as they do.
They're not...bad people, no. Some of my colleagues would disagree. But many mages do not work on the side of humanity. They work on their own side. Most are selfish, egocentric, and have a capacity for cruelty that is shocking.

It allows an access to power beyond human means. You can change your shape, summon the elements, kill your enemies in wretched ways.
And then, on top of that, you can be eligible to enter certain rituals. Like a certain "war".
