WHAT: it's just a little mixer to welcome Mydei and his bakery to the city. nothing bad is gonna happen and it's probably just gonna be boring rich people stuff, right?

[ The envelopes that come are pretty little things. Shimmering and pearlescent with hand-written calligraphy on the front in gleaming golden ink. ]

YOU ARE INVITED
to the premiere of the
CHRYSOS CAFE
an in-development full-service bakery debuting soon in Kaisou

[ The date, time, and location were printed just beneath the summons. A little blurb promised food and refreshments. A strange, blank white card was tucked into every invitation, with another line just underneath all of the rest of the nitty-gritty details, entreating you to hold onto the card.

There's a few ways that one of these fancy little invitations can end up in your hands. If you are known to Gilgamesh, Sampo Koski, Zulius, POKEGo, or the Aides du Meropide, you were likely handed an envelope from the vector you know the best. If you're a business owner, an envelope found its way to your doorstep--one can never have too many local friends when one is going to be a local brand, after all.

And should all of that fail, well.

More than a few of ~~Barbatos'~~ Zulius' moogles moonlight as couriers for pay... but they're also well known to have none of that Eorzean discipline that the Moogle Postmasers of old so prided themselves on. You could definitely look like the guy with the face if it gets them off to the Pompub faster. Alternatively, the divine winds of an inspired September might pick up and splat, there's an envelope right in your mean little mug.

... or you could just try doorcrashing. What's the worst that a boring rich guy's function can muster, right? ]

ON ARRIVAL;

[ So there's door security.

Why wouldn't there be door security?

The venue is one of those charming, ritzy places that breathes opulence and months of being booked out in advance, so the fact that Gilgamesh just decided to do this in the last few weeks conjures up all sorts of ghosts as to what he's willing to do to get his way. You don't learn about places like this unless you have a Coordinator of Ceremonies who knows a guy. It's richly decorated and warmly lit, and again, there's guys at the front door and they are checking invitations quite closely.

If you're gate-crashing, the DC is a 5.
Lighter's checking invitations very closely but he's also chronically faceblind, and the other Aides are... lax, but professionally wary. They're here as a heap of precaution, not a show of force. Sometimes, you just want people in nice charcoal shirts and sunglasses to look smartly over things for a bit of security theater, and if a rogue youkai tries to wreck your shit, it's better safe than sorry, right?

Once you're past the door himbo or his relief, you'll be coat-checked and directed up a lovely grand staircase (or a beautiful antique elevator with an attendant, because we're in money money territory here) to the rich colors and paintings and sculpture-laden pathways that lead to the meeting rooms. There's a few doors that lead off on the far ends of the room; there's an Aide posted at the leftmost door. A well polished wooden dance floor is being attended by a DJ because Mydeimos managed to beg off the string quarter that Gilgamesh had been considering. The DJ'll play mostly instrumental things, but she's just a mortal woman and she can be bribed to put something else on if you need words to dance to. There's plenty of room for a whirl and a twirl, if you want to try your hand at a bit of ballroom.

The rest of the room is crowded up with four key points of convergence: the bar, the buffet, the presentation corner, and Mister Coldfeet's ~~Game~~ Gift Corner. The unguarded door leads out to a balcony, if you find yourself in need of some cool midday to evening air while Caramelldansen plays a room away from you. ]

REFRESHMENTS;

[ There's a strange discord in the presented buffet table--or should I say buffet tables. Most events pick one collection of lowest common denominator foods in order to please and appeal to the maximum amount of people--which is something Gilgamesh has done. There's a buffet line of all of the rich fancy foods you expect; top-tier charcuterie, deviled eggs, fancy little weenies, vegetables wrapped in bacon, tiny tacos, and vegetarian and vegan options of many of the selfsame options. If you dreamed of being offered it by staff in ties off of round golden trays, it's here.

But there's also a whole second set of options and it looks like Gilgamesh found somebody's uncle Konstantinos to get an absolutely gorgeous spread of Greek options. Spanakopita, moussaka, fresh pita and the hot gyro meat that goes best with them, ramekins of stifado, horiatiki, fresh chips and cups of tzatziki--Gilgamesh opted for a little bit of everything in an attempt to give his brother a taste of home, and it'll be a cold day in hell before he ever admits that outloud to anyone, even under pressure of death. Between the two spreads, there's about anything you could imagine, barring... I don't know. Foods made from human products. You'll have to figure out your blood needs on your own, Barefoot Contessa, we don't have any at the store.

As for the bar, well; it's a spectacle all of its own and a certain towering wolf-man and his recruited hands stand at attention to make you drinks worthy of them gods themselves. Gilgamesh makes a point of coming over in the early thrum of the party, after the bar's finished setting up to order an Indigo Wellspring, because the King is ever so fond of his wine... and then he drops a few hundred dollar bills in a jar labeled 'TIPS APPRECIATED' with a little gold placard in front of it.

It's a challenge and a warning, to anyone who thinks they're worthy of having the King's attention. Everybody else can probably give away with like, a fiver or something. You don't have to play the rich boy game if you didn't buy into the table. ]

CHRYSOS CAFE;

[ Of course, the whole reason behind this little get together is to get people excited about the Chrysos Cafe, is it not? It's definitely not one brother's uncertain attempt to prove his willingness to get to know and bond with the other in the only language he knows to matter when it comes to matters of the heart, noooo.

The mockups for the Chrysos Cafe were clearly done by a well-seasoned professional. There's large-set photographs of the space, cleaned and ready for the renovations, and the sketches of where the smart, modern looking ovens and clean, well-lit display cases are going to frame the store while cozy chairs and tables of an eclectic, colorful space simulate a little place to settle in the midst of a busy market. Plants spill their vines from high cabinets and it's bright and clean in the same way that it's worn and warm. A stack of cards with Mydei's 'purritobakes' social media handle take up the small table by the displays, and a sign invites guests to experience a taste of the Chrysos Cafe for themselves in the mockup space, through the open door that has an Aide stationed next to it.

Following the invitation to said mockup space will bring you to a babygate for safety, and where the members of POKEGO are playing rock-paper-scissors to have their turn in the cafe-space-come-to-life.

There's no ovens or machinery or walk-in freezers, of course, but the just-this-side-of-not-matching tables and chairs are lousy with cute, well-behaved Pokemon that would like you to pat them and enjoy a sample of Mydeimos' own cooking. There's some sort of sound-dampening aura to this room, and whether that's from magic or really good soundproofing panels is up to you to decide; the Pokemon needed a quieter space to settle in if there were Far Too Many People and the same can be said for the academics. While there's no coffee and tea on tap, anyone visiting this room will be presented with a well-sized bag filled with the pasteli, tsoureki bread, and loukoumades that Mydei was up 'til three am making in a fugue state. Every bag has a custom purritobakes sticker with a cute little paw print for a backdrop.

If you open your baked goods in this room, the Pokemon will want some. You will be encouraged to open your baked goods in this room. Be wary. ]

MISTER COLDFEET'S GIFT CORNER;

Fancy a game?

[ there's an expression on Sampo's face that suggests he's up to something--and maybe he is, given he's got a whole table in the fancy party hall taken up with--yep, those are most certainly red solo cups. You can't really tell; but they seemed to be weighed down by something, as trying to touch one doesn't move them an inch--but there doesn't appear to be anything inside? ]

Aw, don't be so suspicious, friend. It's just a game. You know, throw the ball, land in a cup, win a prize? It wasn't even my idea--it was my buddy's here!

[ and with a snap of his fingers, a little ... well; one might call it a man that appears. He floats in mid-air just behind Sampo, and while the thing's body seems to be a featureless man who's... missing most of his head, the cloud of party favors and masks that surround the being make it hard to focus on the fact that the being might have a head or not, at all. ]

Buuuut, if you don't trust my game--which you should, it's honestly just in good fun--maybe you wanna play a different game?
It doesn't even have to be WITH me, if you really don't trust your ol' pal Sampo. Play it with a different pal--so long as there's a clear winner and a loser, I'll make sure you get a prize, too! It's called Two Truths and a Lie! Tell three things to a buddy, and suss out which are true and which are false. If you both win the first round, keep playing til' you stump your pal. Winner gets something nice. Whadda ya say?

...And don't forget to pick up one of your grab bags before you go.

...What, have you never been to a rich person's party before? There's always a bag of nice things to take on your way out. Sometimes it's just nice soap or gift cards, but. With the king, you never know, right?

[ The cake is a stunner of a centerpiece. The cake is wonderful. It's three tiers of Lycaon's keenest work, pomegranate and chocolate and red velvet with a special surprise~ and to tell more of the cake is to need its own post. And as for what happens after... ]

AND SO;

[ And in the wake of all the excitement, all things must end.

While Gilgamesh makes arrangements to pay for... certain burnt accoutrements, the rest of the party needs to be broken down and packed up. There's plenty (12) of food that needs to go home with someone, and the rich people certainly aren't going to eat leftovers. Help yourself to a few platefuls of the good stuff. Lycaon probably made sure there were enough plates and tinfoil to see that everything was distributed after the staff had their meals.

And of course, don't forget your giftbag. Maybe check on Sampo Koski, lying face down on the floor to make sure he's breathing until Gilgamesh turns up to get his clown in a princess carry and wanders towards the balcony in search of his poor, overstimulated brother.

All in all, it wasn't too bad of a night, was it? ]

[Is this... the inside of a store being shown? It certainly seems that way, what with the massive amount of wire shelves and hat stands filled to the brim with cowboy hats of all shapes and styles, decorative and worn down cowboy boots that are much the same, and a few tables with the tops absolutely covered in rusted metal pots, pans, belt buckles and cattle brands.

And Ace... is standing in the middle of it all looking... stressed. He looks stressed.]

Okay. I know I had more than this-- I keep counting and everything is... here. But I know this collection had more in it. It's just not enough.

[He lets out a breath, licks of flame sparking in the air from his exhale as he looks around. The orange scales on his chest and shoulders shimmer in the quickly added light.]

... I can't prove it yet. But to whoever touched my stuff? [Here he looks back at the camera, an oddly angry edge to his normally easygoing expression.] I will find you.

Around Town, 9/5-9/7(day)

[For the few days before the full moon, Ace moves around town, searching. For a while, it's not quite clear what he's looking for, just that he's getting more and more worked up as he goes. He glares, he yells, he all but picks fights with anyone who looks at him for more than a few seconds at a time, but eventually... he finds it.

Western paraphernalia.

There's not much in the city, he's known that for a while, but there are a few novelty shops scattered here and there. Boot barns with large wooden or metal decorative boots near their signs, secondhand and craft stores with dummies dressed up as cowboys, modest statues placed outside for a quick photo opportunity for any passing tourist.

Over the course of a few days, Ace is taking all of them.

Their size and weight don't seem to matter much, not with his increased strength. And whatever fasteners or bolts he can't simply brute force his way through he's taking care of with his fire, melting them away until he can wrestle what's left away, sprinting down the street with a torso-sized cowboy boot held overhead, cackling triumphantly.

And with every bit of petty theft, it's like the cloud lifts. However angry and grouchy he was beforehand is momentarily relieved as Ace runs his prize back to where he thinks it belongs - an increasingly cramped storage unit at the edge of town.

Approach him, question him, try and convince him not to rob Bobby Bill's Big Boot Emporium of their store window mannequin-- all of it's fair game until you try to touch his things.]

Kami State Park, 9/7(night)

[All day, Ace has been feeling more and more like something is... wrong. Like his skin doesn't fit, like something is stirring uncomfortably deep in his bones. He knows, he knows that something is wrong, something is different, that he's been different these last few days, but he can't-- he can't control it. He can't stop it.

He's never been this angry in this life, this sure that the entire world is against him. It's nostalgic in the worst way, feeling like everyone is about to rise up and fight him, that he's alone in a world of people with knives pointed in his direction. It's nostalgic, feeling like he doesn't belong in this world, in this body, in-- in anything.

But beyond that, the condition that's been plaguing him since childhood has been... completely absent over the past few days. Ace has barely slept, has barely felt the need to. His body has been energized, but not in a way that makes him feel refreshed. Instead, it feels like something deep, deep in his chest is vibrating faster and faster and faster and if he's not careful, he might...

Explode.

He--

At some point, while wandering near the edge of town, drawn to the comfort of the wilderness Kami State Park provides, Ace stops, feeling that energy coiling in him come to a breaking point. He looks up at the sky, the stars, the wide light of a full moon that has always pushed him to act out. But as red slowly bleeds into that familiar white-- it's different. Tonight, it's different.

The slow bleed of red over the moon bleeds through Ace's vision, takes over, quiets his brain until all thoughts trickle away. Until he's left breathing hard and filled with an energy, a drive, an anger and possessiveness that fills every inch of his body. That has him growling low in his throat and thrashing his tail against the ground. An anger that has claws dig into the dirt as wings thrash on his back, as warmth bubbles up from his chest and sparks through the air in curls of flame out the sides of a snarling maw.

As the human-sized, orange dragon standing in Ace's place lets out a frustrated roar before rushing into the park proper, determined to start the hunt that's been calling to him for days.

Even lost to instincts and in the form of a beast, Ace doesn't attack any of the poor people hiking or camping in the night-- his quarry isn't human. Not tonight. Not unless they're unfortunate enough to be wearing a cowboy hat at night. And even then, all he would do is pounce, snatch the hat in his teeth, and run away.

No, he's here to fight anything that his instincts tell him are threats. Anything he can look at and call a meal. Wild animals, monsters, or any unfortunate app user the creature Ace has become might recognize as being able to put up a fight.]

WHAT: Cyrene is exploring the city... and getting lost in the process

[ Kaisou city. It's... a lot bigger than Cyrene had pictured. Everything is bigger, really, from the buildings, to the food, to the streets, to the buildings, to the overall sprawl of the city itself, to the buildings... She's been here a few days, now, and is still finding new amusements around every corner. There's just so much more to see and do here than there was back home! She could probably spend the next few years wandering this city and barely scratch the surface of everything that it has to offer! She hums to herself as she strolls along, picking her way through crowds of passers-by denser than she's ever seen before. Ah... wait... hasn't she already seen that shop? Wasn't that the place she'd stopped to get this neat patch for her jacket? Just how many left turns has she taken...? She had been so distracted by the sight of a passing stranger's dog that she'd lost track... Oh, well. She'll find her way back to familiar streets sooner or later. There are more adventures to be had in the meantime! And so she finds her way to...

...Central Square?

While the crush of pedestrians is no thinner, moving into the downtown area of the city, Cyrene finds that she has little trouble weaving between the other bodies on the sidewalk as she takes in the sights around her. Namely, she tips her head far, far back to gaze in awe at the towering buildings that make up this part of the city. She's never seen any building this tall in person! How many people could possibly fit inside? It must look like a little ant farm, from a distance, with all of the office workers moving back and forth between their cubicles to the printer to the fax machine to the water fountain to the-- okay, admittedly, she really doesn't know what goes on in office buildings. Only what she's read about in books, or seen on TV. That doesn't change the fact that the offices themselves must be huge, and probably carrying out very important business!

Unfortunately for Cyrene, she spends so much time focused on this tiny fantasy of white-collar workers as busy little ants that she entirely forgets to watch where she's walking for a brief moment. It's not until her foot misses the edge of the curb and she only barely manages to stop herself from stumbling out into traffic that she comes back to reality--only for her panicked jerk back to the safety of the sidewalk to lead her to collide with another person. She can really only recoil again, flustered by the impropriety of bumping into a person on a busy sidewalk, and begins to ramble out an apology. ]

Oh-- ah-- sorry! I really should have been watching where I was walking. Probably should have stopped if I wanted to look all the way up like that... I didn't hurt you or anything, did I?

[ ...or Brick Alley?

There's something especially homey about the way nearly everything in this neighborhood is made out of brick. There's also something incredibly homey about the number of coffee shops scattered around. It feels like every time she turns around another one appears out of the ether! That would be silly, though. She's probably just not looking closely enough at signs. How could she, when there's so much else to take in? Like... counting the number of odd-colored bricks in the pavement. If every other one is a darker shade of red, maybe they came from someplace else? Or maybe they were fired for just a little bit longer than some of the others... okay, maybe that's a little bit boring. She could settle for just trying out some coffee, but... she'd have to choose one of these shops, then! However can she come to a decision when there are so many options?! ]

Mmm... I guess I need to start looking at menus... but... I don't even know what some of these flavors are like. How does anybody just guess on what to try if they've never heard of a "cardamom"? Who puts lemon in their coffee? Oh, how am I supposed to decide?

WHEN: Upon returning from a two month herb picking adventure
WHAT: MaoMao discovers a gift that was left for her, and what trouble she can get into with it.

I feel as though I have been gone forever, especially with looking at all this dust that is on my table. ON THE PLUS SIDE LOOK AT ALL THESE HERBS I GOT! Placing a GIANT overstuffed basket on the table, opening it up to let it just explode out the top. Now what is this thing that was left outside my door? Lifting up what appears to be a cauldron, but made of lightweight metal. As it's lifted an instruction book falls off the side and lands on the floor. It is written almost as if SPECIFICALLY for someone who has no idea about modern materials and technologies.

"Welcome home, please enjoy this gift on behalf of the city. Place the Insta-Pot on your counter and take the cord, it looks like the long black snack attached, and plug the slender metal ends into the socket on the wall that matches them. The device will beep so DO NOT freak out, that means it is on. The Insta-Pot will instantly and correctly cook all items placed inside of it, for best results please use correct measurements and recipes. Enjoy!"

Looking over at the pile of herbs that were just collected, "I should try this out by making a puking-poultice, I am out of it since I tried a few of the unknown herbs. I can't imagine this thing is to hard to use, it did say to just put everything in there and see how it goes."

[First is a video from what looks like a security camera or maybe just a phone, because the angle is weird. Either way, it is of Caleb's driveway. There is a nice SUV there, bought by Gilgamesh, as well as signs of his and March's Pokemon (mostly toys and training stuff for March's Kubfu). There are also, scattered about, half-done "crafts".]

[It looks like the Creations have Caleb's phone, and going by the wizard hat the one that spoke had on they were gonna film something. But they have been distracted because you see, there is someone approaching the house. She is gorgeous, with flaming locks of auburn hair, ivory skin, and eyes of emerald green. Her beauty is beyond compare, her smile as soft as summer rain.

Her desire to steal things unmitigated. She walks up to Caleb's nice SUV, opens the driver side door without a problem, starts the car, and drives off. As she does, you can hear the house's front door open behind the Creations and Caleb yelling.]

[That clip ends and we are now faced with one exhausted raccoon staring into his phone.]

I need to get the Creations their own video camera...and a new car. Again. And maybe security to monitor my car. Why does this keep happening to me...

There is some code cleanup we've been doing that is going out with this push but I don't think there is any new/reworked functionality, so it should be pretty invisible if all goes well.

A reminder to everyone that starting tomorrow, we are being forced to block access to any IP address that geolocates to the state of Mississippi for legal reasons while we and Netchoice continue fighting the law in court. People whose IP addresses geolocate to Mississippi will only be able to access a page that explains the issue and lets them know that we'll be back to offer them service as soon as the legal risk to us is less existential.

The block page will include the apology but I'll repeat it here: we don't do geolocation ourselves, so we're limited to the geolocation ability of our network provider. Our anti-spam geolocation blocks have shown us that their geolocation database has a number of mistakes in it. If one of your friends who doesn't live in Mississippi gets the block message, there is nothing we can do on our end to adjust the block, because we don't control it. The only way to fix a mistaken block is to change your IP address to one that doesn't register as being in Mississippi, either by disconnecting your internet connection and reconnecting it (if you don't have a static IP address) or using a VPN.

In related news, the judge in our challenge to Tennessee's social media age verification, parental consent, and parental surveillance law (which we are also part of the fight against!) ruled last month that we had not met the threshold for a temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing the law while the court case proceeds.

The Tennesee law is less onerous than the Mississippi law and the fines for violating it are slightly less ruinous (slightly), but it's still a risk to us. While the fight goes on, we've decided to prevent any new account signups from anyone under 18 in Tennessee to protect ourselves against risk. We do not need to block access from the whole state: this only applies to new account creation.

Because we don't do any geolocation on our users and our network provider's geolocation services only apply to blocking access to the site entirely, the way we're implementing this is a new mandatory question on the account creation form asking if you live in Tennessee. If you do, you'll be unable to register an account if you're under 18, not just the under 13 restriction mandated by COPPA. Like the restrictions on the state of Mississippi, we absolutely hate having to do this, we're sorry, and we hope we'll be able to undo it as soon as possible.

Happy September everyone! Here we are, once again at the end of summer! And what a summer it's been huh? This might have been the most restful August we've had in awhile!

We'd like to thank everyone that participated in clearing out the Dungeon Gates last month. Thanks to you, the citizens of the city remained safe and we were able to acquire a lot of great resources! Overall, it was a win for everyone!

In other news, after this weekend school will be starting up again! I hope everyone that's returning to school this year have a wonderful school year! The seers have asked me to remind you all to double check to make sure you are aware of all the classes you might be registered for! Not sure what that's about, but that's very thoughtful of them!

Also, we're very excited to be announcing the grand opening of the Pokemon Contest Hall! The Pokemon Contest Hall will be dedicated to holding monthly competitions where your beloved pokemon can register in hopes of winning prizes and rewards! This month, as their grand opening, they will be holding races! 100 meter dashes, full marathons- and you can even build a go-kart with your Pokemon to race in! Check it out if you have a chance!
