Eh, I went to him afterwards, and he claimed that going for you in trial was the only way to guarantee that you would be spared for execution. Same with Jeanne. I don't know the conditions, but it seems like "the easy option" in trial plays a roll in that. I don't know. He was the one who told me you would be fine the next day, by the way. So he already was working to save you, or at least knew the people who did.

[But still, yeah, it was a dick move on his part.]
